Will ChatGPT steal your job too?
If you believed that artificial intelligence has bypassed your field of work, you are sorely mistaken. However, perhaps it's safe - for now.
Earlier this year, the AI text-to-image generator caused a stir in the world of artists and creatives. It may have been the first time individuals seriously pondered the direction artificial intelligence was taking and its potential impact on their work and future. ChatGPT created similar confusion, this time in the realms of writing and programming.
Unless you've been living under a rock in recent days, you've probably heard of "a revolutionary language processing technology that uses a machine learning algorithm to generate human-like answers to questions," or a chatbot system that can respond to virtually any query within seconds. Free. Even in Serbian.
"When something revolutionary occurs, it usually spreads on social media. This time, it didn't just spread; it inundated social media. People competed to showcase how they could utilize ChatGPT in innovative ways," remarks Nikola Jagodić, digital marketing specialist at Smartpoint Adria agency. He adds, "Not even ten days have passed, and we already have the first millionaire who managed to write a children's story through this platform, turned it into a book, and sold tens of thousands of copies. All within just a few days."
From a corporate video script to a December haiku, a business plan for a small scented candle business, code for a WordPress site, or even dating advice - ChatGPT assists you in discovering anything you desire, whether your query is made in jest or with seriousness. It's truly fascinating, and the potential for conversations and exploring sub-questions seems boundless. Ultimately, the essence is that you feel like you're interacting with someone who is well-informed and "yours," capable of knowing everything.
OK, let's not exaggerate. ChatGPT doesn't know everything. Given that it came into existence as of November 30, 2022, the software is still in the testing phase. The site itself clearly and transparently states that ChatGPT can sometimes provide incorrect or biased information, and its knowledge about events after 2021 is limited. Some experts criticize it for exclusively giving lengthy answers without truly understanding the question. However, despite the mistakes in its work, considering that we're discussing artificial intelligence here, it learns from its mistakes. (Don't be envious!)
The fact that it's such a groundbreaking discovery, comparable to the launch of the first iPhone in 2007, is evident from the fact that in the first five days, ChatGPT garnered over a million users! Is it curiosity or the desire for a quick, easy, and somewhat "decent" solution for any task? Perhaps both. Naturally, we all had to see what was going on there exactly.
ChatGPT uses the entire internet as its information source - anything ever recorded there becomes part of its final answer. It's already beloved by those who prefer to research in a conversational format, although Google still leads in terms of search volume. In fact, many ChatGPT users cross-check the information obtained this way later on Google. Nevertheless, if chatbots continue to grow and evolve in this manner, the tech giant will need to enhance its search capabilities to meet user demands.
Just like with AI text-to-image generators, this AI text-based tool works so well that it's challenging for us to comprehend its effectiveness! However, being good doesn't equate to being perfect, and if we aspire to excellence, we won't simply adopt a given solution as is. In other words, regardless of how precise our request is, it's highly likely that we'll use the responses received only as a starting point or inspiration, then personalize and adapt the final text to suit specific needs. Yes, your work can be optimized, and yes, you might finish in half an hour what would typically take several hours, but you'll still be doing much more than just entering a question into the provided field. Perhaps we're just consoling ourselves...
"It is true that ChatGPT is a tool that provides average content. That's precisely the point: if we remain at an average level in our work, a robot could easily replace us. We must learn how to use these tools in the future so that we don't settle for mediocrity," emphasizes Nikola Jagodić.
Overall, the evolution of human-computer interaction that Facebook, Google, and Microsoft discussed in 2016 has occurred and is ongoing. Chatbots and digital assistants are becoming increasingly advanced, and while some anticipate smoother operations, others fear job displacement. Which group we align with depends on us and what we genuinely bring to the table.
"The possibilities offered by ChatGPT are incredible and currently unfathomable. It took our parents 10 months to find and read a few books; we need a few hours to search the Internet and create some content, and AI tools will enable our children to do all this in just a few seconds," explains Jagodić. He concludes that ChatGPT can open up the opportunity for us to master a greater volume of information, thereby enabling us to achieve previously unimaginable feats in life.
